Social Media Agency vs. Content Marketing Agency: How to Tell Which One You Most Need

I had a discovery call this week that I keep thinking about. The founder on the other end runs a purpose-led and values-aligned business (exactly the kind of company we love working with) and about ten minutes in, they said something I have heard a lot over the years: “We don’t need strategy. We just need someone to execute.”

My heart sank a little. We’ve been doing this for almost fourteen years now, and there was a time early on when I did, actually, say yes to exactly that, no questions asked. We needed the business. And how complicated could it be?

It wasn’t complicated, as it turned out, to begin guessing at the kind of content that would generate affinity among audiences and results for their business. But it was hard. We were flying blind, even after a rushed planning session. Ultimately we had to learn about the business as we went, having skipped the strategic groundwork, and just started producing. That doesn’t result in good content. Or accurate content. Or content with any kind of understanding of audience or need.

The experience ultimately did not go well, and the business results were nonexistent, even though a post or two generated a lot of engagement (the problem was that engagement didn’t translate into anything for that unique business). The content wasn’t on brand. It wasn’t in their voice. It didn’t talk about their products and services the way they actually wanted to be talked about. We had to rework the same posts and articles multiple, multiple times, under time pressure and cost for our team, and theirs. Ugh. It makes me cringe, remembering the stress that project put our team under, and the time we invested in trying to manage it. Never again, friends.

Execution without strategy to ground it – sure, it results in content, and maybe even a few gems that people like. But it usually isn’t content that works long-term and consistently for your business.

Today, we never skip the strategic grounding, even when a client is sure they don’t need it; we’ll always do at least a ‘light-touch’ version of our signature strategic roadmap in order to set ourselves up for success.

And you know what? The recent call I mentioned earlier turned out to be a good example of why we do that. Once we walked them through what we do, how we do it, and why (and showed them our roadmaps, and some of the results achieved by an efficient and consistent monthly process) they came around and hired us for the strategy as well as the execution.

They’d come in thinking they needed a social media agency. They emerged asking us to develop the strategy – so that they could create confidence with clarity and confidence.

Just to be super clear: this is by no means a dig at this client, or at the many founders and marketing managers who have asked for something similar. We totally get it: You need good content out there, fast. And it’s not always easy to figure out how to get there.

Many agencies of all kinds are happy to say yes to ‘just starting’.

But in my humble experience, “run our social media” and “grow our business with content” are very different requests, even when they sound the same on a discovery call. And mixing them up gets expensive quickly, in time and in results.

So here’s the distinction, in my mind:

A social media agency executes: it posts, schedules, runs paid campaigns, and manages your channels. This is the core of most social media marketing services.

A content marketing agency (like ours) does a little more upstream of that: it builds the messaging, the audience clarity, and the plan that decides what’s worth saying in the first place, on social media and everywhere else your audience shows up.

Both are incredibly valuable services. And you probably know which you need more, right now.

If, for example, you already know exactly what you want to say and just need help getting it out consistently, a social media agency could be a great fit.

If you don’t yet, or if what you’ve been doing isn’t getting the results you need, that’s where agencies like ours tend to come in.

So, to go a layer deeper on that split above…

What a social media agency is set up to do

A social media agency, generally speaking, manages your channels day to day. Scheduling, community management, paid social, reporting on engagement – that’s the operational core of it, and it matters. If your brand already has clear messaging in place, this is often all you need.

Where things tend to get shaky, in my experience, is when a business hires that kind of help hoping it’ll also answer some bigger questions along the way: who we’re for, what we stand for, why anyone should care. But your average posting schedule was never really set up to carry that kind of weight.

Where a content marketing agency excels

We dig into your why and who. Your strategy, in other words. Who you are and how you want to come across. Which services and products you want to talk about most and how. Who you want to reach and engage, and what you’d like them to do as a result of consuming your content. What business results and metrics you truly care about and want to see and think about. Much more, too, but you get the gist.

Before anything gets scheduled, in our world, our work is figuring out who you’re talking to, what you want them to feel, believe, and know before they buy, and how that ladders up to your business goals.

Social media becomes one important series of channels that the plan runs through, alongside your blog, your email list, and wherever else your audience pays attention.

And on social, your posts might look similar from the outside, but what they’re expressing and what they’re carrying is rooted in your unique brand, your purpose and values, and what you need to accomplish as a business.

For us it’s less about deciding which platform to post on, and more about helping you determine, with clarity, what you most need to say to drive the actual business growth you most need.

“We care less about which platform to post on than how to drive the business growth you need.”

The tell is usually in the questions you can’t answer

Here’s a question I ask almost every founder who comes to us this way: could you describe, in one sentence, who your content is for and what you want them to feel before they buy from you? It’s close to the first question in our own Content With Purpose framework. In my experience, it’s a pretty good sorting mechanism; not perfect, but close.

If you can answer that clearly, you’re probably in execution mode, and a good social media marketing agency, or a monthly content package, might serve you well. If you can’t yet, well, that’s usually where the real gap lives.

This comes up a lot with B2B companies leaning on social media as their whole content plan, sometimes after working with a B2B marketing agency that was only ever set up to execute, not to build strategy. Social can build awareness, in my experience. It doesn’t always build the kind of trust a longer sales cycle needs, at least not on its own.

Why this matters even more if you’re values-led

If your business exists for a reason beyond profit, generic content tends to fall flatter than it does for most brands. Your audience showed up expecting something more specific from you, that’s just been my experience of working with values-led founders for over a decade.

As a certified B Corp working with purpose-driven founders and marketing leaders across Canada and the US, this is the pattern I see most: teams working hard on social media, doing everything “right,” and still not quite understanding why it isn’t translating into growth. More often than not, the missing piece sits somewhere upstream of the content itself.

Want to know which one you need?

If you already know what you want to say and just need it executed well, consistently, our Fractional Content Partnership (starting with the Essentials tier, for a single channel) tends to be a good fit for that.

If you’re not sure your messaging is quite right yet, our Content With Purpose Roadmap is probably where we’d start instead: the full three-phase Roadmap if you want the whole strategic foundation put together, or the Light-Touch Roadmap if you want that same clarity in about a month, with a lot less time and effort required on your end.

Or, if you’d rather just talk it through first, book a discovery call and we’ll help you figure out which one fits where you’re at.

A couple of quick ones, in case you’re still deciding

Is a content marketing agency more expensive than a social media agency? Not necessarily, in my experience. A social media retainer can look cheaper month to month. But strategy work upfront tends to save you money later – it keeps you from paying, again and again, to produce content that was never quite going to land.

Can a content marketing agency also run my social media? Yes, usually. Most do, Forge & Spark included. Social just becomes one channel inside a bigger plan, rather than a standalone service.

Do I need a content marketing agency in Canada, or does location not matter? In my experience, location matters less than fit. A content marketing agency in Canada might pick up on local context a little faster. But the bigger question, always, is whether the agency understands your audience and your values.

What’s the difference between a social media marketing agency and a content marketing agency? A social media marketing agency tends to focus on one channel: posting, community management, paid social. A content marketing agency creates the strategy that decides what all of that should say in the first place – and often runs the execution too. We do both, here. We just refuse to skip that first part.
